I think the difference between a psychological experiment and the reality we occupy is that the participants know their decisions matter.
They may not know the parameters or design, but they are conscious of their choices and it's consequences.
Whereas in modern day society, we barely think about others. We turn a blind eye to the the capitalistic evils that surround us, and refuse to a live a harder life, where we could opt for better, cleaner and healthier.
The fast fashion industry is an excellent example. Add in social media trends, and it strongly encourages, buy more, buy cheap, wear something new every day, and throw without care. It's pretty sickening.
