I prefer comments. They offer opportunities for conversation, as you've already mentioned.

But as a reader I do like the highlighting tool. And also as a writer, I like getting to know what lines readers resonated with or liked.

However, I don't think we need to know what each other highlighted. It can be distracting. :)
