I find with pop culture pieces - I used to write them ages ago - timing is important. What I mean is, sitting on drafts leads to all sorts of doubts. Sometimes, even in the research phase, I've felt like stopping - because others had the same idea or did a better job with it. But so what? And it's not like many people are reading, anyway. 😁
