I could picture it so well - the afternoon, the discomfort, the sandwich.

Reminded me of a guy in college who said something like, "You don't eat like a woman," while I was biting into some fried chicken, in a messy way.

It's not just you. It does take long to learn these lessons. Things are clear to me only in hindsight.
