A Spam Account is Following Me Around on Medium
And it’s oddly flattering
Something strange has been happening for the last two weeks. All my stories have a view and clap within seconds of posting. It’s getting warm.
“Your story has a response.”
That’s odd. It usually takes a few hours for the first view to pop up, and responses are spare. Nevertheless, some sparks of hope showed up from the dusty bottom — the gap between the cabinet and the floor, prompting me to quickly read it on my phone. What could it be this time? I wondered.
At first, it sounded like a recruiter message. I know the combination of fake enthusiasm and desire all too well because I used to be one in another life. They loved reading my article and how I easily explained a tough topic.
It was a long message, about 150 words, and right at the bottom was a suspicious link asking me to join their cult. Well, wellness and coaching group. And it was rather tempting to click on it at the cost of monetary or identity theft. Someone liked my work and wanted me. That’s rare.
With a heavy heart, I reported the account.
The next time I published, I received the same message but from a different account. Both times the user had joined this platform…
